Senate Showdown: A Week of Nunchucks, No-Shows, and NFTs

PHOENIX — Welcome to this week’s edition of the ‘Senate Showdown’ — a weekly roundup of the latest news in Arizona’s “crowded,” “costly,” and “chaotic” GOP Senate primary.

With “no clear frontrunner,” these amateur candidates will be busy duking it out well into the summer, ahead of Arizona’s August primary date. Until then, the Arizona Democratic Party’s ‘Showdown’ is here to help you keep track of this race’s breaking news, cringiest Tweets, and nastiest doses of infighting.

Here’s what you missed this week:

JUST THE TWO OF US: Blake Masters and Mark Brnovich dodged voters yet again — this time, skipping out on last night’s America Pack forum. Pro tip: If you don’t want to talk to voters, maybe don’t run for public office.

WHERE’SBRNO.COM: After Trump attacked Brnovich last Friday and this Monday, Blake Masters launched a microsite — WheresBrnovich.com — counting the days since Brnovich caved to political pressure, launched an unfounded investigation into Arizona’s 2020 election, and, so far, has failed to deliver evidence of fraud (because there is none). Kudos though, to Masters for bringing back Brno’s infamous nunchuck video.

ONCE A TECH BRO…: Something something you can’t take the tech out of a tech bro. While Blake Masters campaigns on the promise to take down Big Tech, it looks like he feels just fine raising money off them. Masters’ latest stunt is selling “super rare” NFTs to raise some quick campaign cash ahead of next month’s FEC deadline.

NO, I’M WINNING!: Both Jim Lamon and Blake Masters touted polls, each promising they’re surging in this “decidedly weak” field of “lesser-known Republicans.” Not sure about you, but we wholeheartedly trust them!

BOO HOO BRNO: Apparently, Mark Brnovich is so desperate for a positive press hit that he phoned an old friend to run an embarrassing op-ed defending Brnovich’s “record as a solid conservative” and whining at Blake Masters to stop pitching oppo on him.

HANDS OFF OUR REPRODUCTIVE CARE: Earlier this week, Republicans in the AZ State House pushed through an oppressive and regressive 15-week abortion ban. Reminder: the GOP Senate primary candidates are all running to bring the same aggressively unpopular anti-choice agenda to Washington.
