Republican Rampage on Roe Continues in the AZ Senate Primary

GOP Candidates Vow to Go After Reproductive Rights, Ignore the Will of Arizonans
PHOENIX — At a candidate forum over the weekend, Arizona’s GOP Senate primary candidates (sans Brnovich, who cited a scheduling conflict) doubled down on their commitment to dismantle Roe v. Wade, its five decades of legal precedent, and the individual liberties of millions of Arizonans.
This week, we’ll be breaking down each candidate’s position on access to reproductive health care (spoiler: they don’t want any), but for now, we’ll leave you with these highlights from Saturday:

  • Blake Masters reiterated that he “absolutely hope[s] they overturn Roe” and even went so far as to suggest Republicans “go on offense” to squash states’ rights to legislate on the issue.
  • Justin Olson announced that stripping Arizonans of their rights is “the most important decision the United States Senate can make” and promised, if elected, to push a federal “heartbeat bill” (read: abortion ban) “modeled after the great patriots in Texas.”
  • Mick McGuire emphasized that “Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided” and reiterated that overturning the popular precedent was one of his top priorities.
  • Jim Lamon argued that “we owe [it] to our fellow Americans” to run contrary to overwhelming public opinion and crack down on individual liberty.

“This field of Republican candidates has made it crystal clear that they’re willing to ignore the preferences of Arizonans and push their restrictive, dangerous policies in a reckless competition against each other,” said ADP spokesperson Hannah Goss. “Perhaps California tech bro Blake Masters and Utah resident Jim Lamon are too unfamiliar with this state to understand that the overwhelming majority of Arizonans support the right to safe and legal abortion. These out-of-state politicians are pushing out-of-touch positions and showing exactly why they’re unfit to represent Arizona in the Senate.”
