Anti-Arizona: #AZSen Candidates Are Threatening Our Democracy
PHOENIX — This week, as we near the end of the “bloody” and “bitter” GOP Senate “primary fight,” the ADP is taking a step back from the usual chaos to break down the field’s dangerous policy positions and outline exactly why these “decidedly weak” candidates would be so harmful for Arizonans.
Earlier this week, we outlined their plans to dismantle Social Security and ban abortion, and now we’re turning the page to expose their dangerous threats to our democracy. The GOP Senate primary candidates have fully embraced the dangerous and baseless lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 election, all to earn the support of their “kingmaker” Trump and his far-right supporters in a desperate attempt to make it out of this contest on top.
Blake Masters:
- In an (eventually successful) effort to snag the coveted Trump endorsement, shamelessly declared that Trump won the 2020 election;
- Floated the unfounded conspiracy theory that the January 6th insurrection was set up by the FBI; and
- Has already cast doubt on the legitimacy of the upcoming 2022 elections.
Jim Lamon:
- Falsely “claimed to be an authorized Arizona elector” through his participation in the fake elector scheme, which he bragged about on the campaign trail to win the support of election deniers; and
- Spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to bankroll the AZ GOP’s “bogus” Maricopa County audit of the 2020 election.
Mark Brnovich:
- “Under pressure from Trump,” has used his official office “almost exclusively to promote his campaign,” launching an unnecessary taxpayer-funded investigation into Arizona’s 2020 election; and
- After previously admitting Trump lost the 2020 election, sowed further doubt in our elections by saying “we all know what happened in 2020” — all to cater to the far-right fringes of the GOP primary electorate.
By spreading baseless lies about an election decided nearly two years ago, these desperate candidates have made it clear they’re willing to do and say anything to win — even if it means ignoring the issues that actually matter to Arizonans.
