Congressional Corral: Crickets and Lies

Friday, April 12th, 2024

Arizona Republicans have either said nothing or flat out lied to Arizonans in response to Tuseday’s Supreme Court decision to ban abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest

ARIZONA- Following the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to revert Arizona back to 1864, Arizona Republicans have been talking about everything but their actual records on abortion. It’s Friday, so here’s a round up (corral) of what our Arizona Republicans are up to:

  • Rep. Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06): lied this Tuesday when he said he’s worked to empower women to make their own decisions. Ciscomani has the same mission as Donald Trump, supporting efforts to pass the Life at Conception Act which bans abortion nationwide and jeopardizes IVF, co-sponsoring H.R. 7, legislation that prohibits using government subsidies, including tax credits, to purchase insurance plans that cover abortions, and voting against legislation that would protect women’s access to contraceptives. One of the first actions Juan took in Congress was voting for anti-abortion legislation and he celebrated the overturning of Roe, which was cited 22 times in the court’s decision.
  • Rep. Eli Crane (AZ-02): has been silent about the Supreme Court’s decision, but has had time to send out a tweet calling undocumented people “aliens.” While Crane has been silent, his voting anti-abortion voting record has been loud: he’s called Roe a “mistake,’ and co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act which bans abortion nationwide and jeopardizes IVF.
  • Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05): said he hasn’t had time to read the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to bring Arizona back to 1864 because it aligns perfectly with his voting record in Congress. Biggs introduced the “Abortion Is Not Health Care Act” which prohibits a tax deduction for medical expenses paid for an abortion and defines life starting at conception, called abortion “evil”, signed onto an amicus brief that urges the Supreme Court to ban mifepristone a safe abortion medication, and co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act which bans abortion nationwide and jeopardizes IVF.
  • Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-09): has been quiet on the Arizona Supreme Court taking Arizona back to 1864. Gosar has consistently gotten an A+ rating from the far right anti abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro Life American who celebrated the decision calling it a “major advancement in the fight for life in Arizona.” Gosar has called the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe “a blessing to America,” co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act which bans abortion nationwide and jeopardizes IVF, and signed onto an amicus brief that urges the Supreme Court to ban mifepristone, a safe abortion medication.
