Senate Showdown: #AZSen Candidates Spent the Week Eyeing a Tax Hike and Packing for Florida

PHOENIX — Welcome to this week’s edition of the ‘Senate Showdown’ — a weekly roundup of the latest news in Arizona’s “crowded,” “costly,” and “chaotic” GOP Senate primary.

With “no clear frontrunner,” these amateur candidates will be busy duking it out well into the summer, ahead of Arizona’s August primary date. Until then, the Arizona Democratic Party’s ‘Showdown’ is here to help you keep track of this race’s breaking news, cringiest Tweets, and nastiest doses of infighting.

Here’s what you missed this week:

IT’S T-U-C-S-O-N: The Tucson Weekly published a rundown of carpetbagging Blake Masters and Jim Lamon’s embarrassing inability to spell Tucson correctly. The takeaway: “Maybe if we’d spelled it Tuscon Weekly, they would have gotten back to us?”

Y’ALL…READ THE ROOM: GOP Senate candidates like Thiel-backed tech bro Blake Masters and almost entirely self-funded Jim Lamon have a new platform they’re running on: Raising taxes on “as much as half the country,” including retirees and working families.

THE SITCH W/ MITCH: In the Trump vs. McConnell war, Blake Masters made it abundantly clear that he is “not looking for [McConnell’s] support.” His only request for the Minority Leader: “It would be nice if he didn’t drop like $20 million into the race to prop up a bad candidate like Brnovich.” Ouch.

BUMMER FOR BRNO: Mark Brnovich rolled up to argue a case in front of the Supreme Court in his sneakers only for conservative Justices Kavanaugh, Thomas, and Barrett to effectively call his trip a waste of time.

PACKING FOR CPAC: Jim Lamon is heading down to Orlando to speak at “the world’s largest gathering of conservatives.” Masters and Brnovich shouldn’t feel too bad about being left out, though — Lamon reportedly paid $40,000 for that speaking spot.
