ICYMI: The Arizona Senate Primary is “Completely Up for Grabs”
PHOENIX — Y’all…we’re going to be here for a while.
Yesterday’s Morning Score in POLITICO broke down our messy, chaotic, and crowded GOP Senate primary and came to the same conclusion we did: This is gonna take a second.
With “no clear frontrunner,” this cast of characters is expected to duke it out until the Arizona August primary date and fight for “kingmaker” former President Trump’s approval — all while blowing through some serious cash.
A long six months away from primary day, here’s where we’re at:
- “Top Republican fundraiser” Jim Lamon has been busy buying up endorsements, loaning himself $8 million, and doubling down on his participation in a 2020 fake elector scam.
- Silicon Valley golden boy Blake Masters scooped up a Club for Growth endorsement to compound the $10 million investment from his tech boss Peter Thiel’s Super PAC.
- Mark Brnovich is “leading in early polling” thanks only to his existing name ID. Although his fundraising is… less than impressive, after caving to pressure and investigating the 2020 election, his relationship with President Trump drastically improved — landing Brnovich a very helpful photo which he’s hoping will help scrape together some cash for his campaign.
- “Then there’s the Ducey factor.” After rumors that our term-limited, extremely unpopular governor was toying with a Senate run, POLITICO notes that Ducey is “loathed by Donald Trump” and would face an uphill battle — especially as Masters pledged to stay in and “beat him.”
