FACT CHECK: Kari Lake Caught Lying About Katie Hobbs to Distract From Her Dangerous Stances on Abortion
Lake’s Claim About Hobbs Is “Mostly False”
PHOENIX— Politifact is out with a double hitter on Kari Lake, fact checking her lies and confirming her long and well documented support Arizona’s abortion bans. In an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Lake repeated her outrageous and false claim that Katie Hobbs supports medical cruelty toward infants. This prompted Politifact to rate Lake’s claim as “mostly false,” saying Lake is “mislead[ing] on [her] opponent’s abortion law vote.”
Politifact also verified that Lake supports Arizona’s complete abortion ban, which she called a “great law.” Politifact points to a June 24 interview where Lake reacted to the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe. “I’m incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that’s already on the books,” Lake said. “I believe it’s ARS 13-3603, so it will prohibit abortion in Arizona except to save the life of a mother. And I think we’re going to be paving the way and setting course for other states to follow.”
“Yet again Kari Lake was caught lying about Hobbs’ record. Kari Lake should remember that when it comes to her own radical stance on abortion, we have the receipts. She should also remember that abortion access is widely popular in Arizona, and a motivating issue for voters,” said Josselyn Berry, spokesperson for the Arizona Democratic Party. “Meanwhile, her opponent Katie Hobbs is unwavering in her support of reproductive freedom and women’s rights.”
Kari Lake’s Real Stances on Abortion:
As the Arizona Republic reported, “Lake has not budged from her staunch opposition to abortion,” despite a majority of Arizonans supporting access to abortion and it becoming a top issue in this election. Lake has long supported the 1901 ban on abortion, which has no exceptions for rape or incest and requires prison time for doctors. She responded to the SCOTUS decision overturning Roe by saying she supports the 1901 Arizona law and celebrated it again as a “great law” during a forum in February and said she would support and enforce it during the Republican primary debate. She’s said, “I am pro-life 100%. I’m against abortion,” opposing exceptions for rape and incest. Kari Lake has also referred to people who seek abortion care as “executioners” and murderers.
