Blake Breakdown: The One Before He Loses It
PHOENIX — Welcome to the last edition of the ‘Blake Breakdown’ — a weekly roundup of the latest news on Blake Masters, the “fringe,” “extreme,” and “dangerous” Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.
Known for his divisive rhetoric, far-right positions, and Twitter temper tantrums, Masters is a risk Arizonans cannot afford. For the last time before November 8th, the Arizona Democratic Party’s ‘Blake Breakdown’ is here to help you keep track of the latest reason why he has no business serving in the U.S. Senate.
Here’s what you missed this week:
YES WE CAN AND YES HE DID: Oh yeah, he really went there. On Wednesday night, former President Barack Obama keynoted a Phoenix rally and wasted no time before ripping into Masters, slamming his call to “cut the knot” on seniors’ Social Security, support for a national abortion ban, and conspiracies around the 2020 election. And then, hitting the nail on the head as he so often does, Obama riffed (half) joking, “If you were trying to create in a lab a lackey Republican politician, it’d look a lot like Masters. Campaign backed by a tech billionaire who’s questioned the value of democracy? Check. Wants to give tax cuts to big corporations … Check.” No lies detected.
YOU JUST GOT BRN(O)ED: During last Sunday night’s 60 Minutes interview, Arizona AG and former Blake Masters Senate primary opponent Mark Brnovich called Masters’ election fraud claims “horseshit” and “a giant grift,” finally saying out loud what we’ve all been thinking for two years now. Masters recently doubled down on his baseless belief that “Trump won in 2020” after receiving an on-camera scolding from the former president himself. A flag: If it gets to the point where even notorious Trump sycophant Mark Brnovich is calling out a candidate for kiss-assery, you know you’ve got a problem.
OBSTRUCTION: On Monday, the American Independent released a new report detailing Masters’ grand plan to do absolutely nothing if he’s elected to the Senate. Going scorched-earth on the Arizona tradition of bipartisanship and pragmatism, Masters has called to block all federal legislation in 2023 and 2024, promised to “publicly shame” and “ridicule” moderate Republicans, and mocked the idea of working across the aisle. Clearly, some people have the temperament to serve their constituents in the world’s greatest deliberative body, and some people are Blake Masters.
LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE: After appearing together at the same Kari Lake event two weeks ago, failed presidential candidate and attention-thirsty political opportunist Tulsi Gabbard officially endorsed Blake Masters this week. With her (delayed) endorsement, Gabbard joins quite the cast of characters (read: misfits) in supporting Blake including disgraced former Congressman Madison Cawthorn, prominent antisemite Marjorie Taylor Greene, national abortion ban architect Lindsey Graham, Senator hallway sprinter Josh Hawley, and Rick Scott, the infamous Medicare fraudster who is publicly planning to sunset Social Security. With friends like these, there’s no question that Masters just isn’t right for Arizona.
CARPOOLING WITH KARI: Incapable of courting many voters by himself, yesterday Masters physically — not just metaphorically anymore — hitched a ride to Election Day via Kari Lake and her last-minute bus tour to rally the Republican base. For months now, Masters has pathetically been “riding on the coattails” of Lake, mooching off her every move in hopes of inching closer to the Senate.
