AZ Republicans Are Using the Legislature to Attack LGBTQ+ Children in the Classroom
PHOENIX- This legislative session, Arizona Republicans continue to play politics with the classroom, attempting to pass a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ school restrictions. From legislation that regulates pronouns used in schools to which bathrooms people are allowed to use.

“While Governor Hobbs is dedicated to vetoing legislation that puts LGBTQ+ children at risk in the classroom, the political games that Republicans are attempting to play in schools is dangerous,” said Chair of the Arizona Democratic Party, Yolanda Bejarano. “The Arizona Democratic party has the back of teachers, school administrators, and the LGBTQ+ community as Republicans attempt to attack their professions and existence. ”

In the 2023 Legislative Session, Republicans have introduced and passed the following anti-LGBTQ+ bills:

  • SB 1001:Would make it illegal for teachers, staff, and other school professionals to respect the pronouns of students. (Vetoed by Governor Hobbs, 5/19/2023)
  • SB 1005: Opens schools to threats of legal attacks for providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students. (Vetoed by Governor Hobbs, 4/11/2023)
  • SB 1040: Would ban trans students and school personnel from using school restrooms that match their gender identity. (Vetoed by Governor Hobbs, 6/08/2023)
  • SB 1700: Gives parents the authority to create a list of banned books, including the power to ban books that include trans and nonbinary identities. (Still in the House)
