Arizona Democratic Party Highlights State of Abortion Access

Arizona voters are the last line of defense for abortion rights this November, the Arizona Democratic Party is Highlighting extremist records of MAGA-Republicans on the ballot

February 28, 2024

ARIZONA- Donald Trump has laid out the groundwork for a nationwide federal abortion ban. Since the Dobbs decision, reproductive rights in Arizona have been under attack from a Ducey signed 15 week abortion ban to the State Supreme Court hearing oral arguments for reinstating the 1864 abortion ban.

Arizona Republicans on every level of the ballot are doing Trump’s dirty work and pushing extreme abortion policies:

  • A majority of Arizona Republicans have co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act which would have the same effect as the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling on IVF access and ban all abortions nationwide.
  • MAGA Republican Representative Schweikert co-sponsor of H.R.816 and H.R. 1011, which recently inspired the H.R. 431, Life at Conception Act that House Republicans introduced in 2023. Both pieces of legislation would ban all abortions and does not exclude IVF treatments in defining “person” as “each and every member of the species homo sapiens at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization.”
  • Trump has long supported a nationwide abortion ban, hosting the Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who ruled to restrict access to IVF at the White House and during Trump’s campaigns.
  • Rep. Ciscomani co-sponsored H.R. 7, legislation that prohibits using government subsidies, including tax credits, to purchase insurance plans that cover abortions. Women who are serving in the military, veterans or covered under Medicaid, as well as federal employees and those covered by the Indian Health Service, would therefore not be able to use their credits to purchase insurance that covers abortions.
  • In April, Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed House Bill 2427, a Rep. Gress-sponsored bill establishing the foundation in Arizona for fetal personhood, opening the door for banning reproductive healthcare services such as IVF.
  • Kari Lake has made her opposition to reproductive rights clear, and said just a few months ago her dangerous positions on abortionhaven’t changed, actually.” Lake’s extreme views include support for banning abortions without exceptions for rape or incest for Arizonans, that “life begins at conception,” celebrating the fall of Roe, and “banning those types of abortion pills” in reference to medication abortions.

This November, Arizonans will have the opportunity to vote in favor of codifying Roe v. Wade protections into Arizona state law via ballot initiative. To learn more about this initiative, please visit https://arizonaforabortionaccess.org/.
