Senate Showdown: Ducey’s Out, “A Crowd of Lesser-Known,” “Decidedly Weak” Candidates Remain

PHOENIX — Welcome to this week’s edition of the ‘Senate Showdown’ — a weekly roundup of the latest news in Arizona’s “crowded,” “costly,” and “chaotic” GOP Senate primary.

With “no clear frontrunner,” these amateur candidates will be busy duking it out well into the summer, ahead of Arizona’s August primary date. Until then, the Arizona Democratic Party’s ‘Showdown’ is here to help you keep track of this race’s breaking news, cringiest Tweets, and nastiest doses of infighting.

Here’s what you missed this week:

YOU JUST GOT REJECTED: Much to the dismay of D.C. GOP bigwigs, Doug Ducey is not running for Senate. Not only did Ducey reject them, but now they’re left with “a crowd of lesser-known Republicans” that are “decidedly weak.”

“I’D LIKE TO THANK…MYSELF”: When it comes to Arizona Republicans, apparently bullying works? Former President Donald Trump took a victory lap yesterday when it became clear that his months of attacking Doug Ducey got him exactly what he wanted: A Ducey-less Senate primary.

IT’S ALL IN THE DELIVERY: Mark Brnovich, Jim Lamon, and Blake Masters are about to receive their very own copy of the GOP plan to raise taxes on “as much as half of the country,” just in case they need to reference it when they try to justify their tax hike on seniors and working families to Arizona voters.

STOOD UP: Mark Brnovich bailed on a meeting with local Arizona voters to put on a tux, eat hotel food, and schmooze with Washington Republicans at CPAC in Orlando, Florida.

GET A SLICE OF THIS: With the help of some colorful (albeit inaccurate) pie charts, Jim Lamon went after his opponents for their out-of-state fundraising. Here’s the thing: The Alabama native turned Utah resident conveniently left out the fact that over 93% of his “fundraising” comes from multi-million dollar loans that he’s given to himself.
