REMINDER: Kari Lake Supports “Draconian” Territorial Abortion Ban
ARIZONA -– Today, the Arizona Supreme Court will begin considering whether the “draconian” 1864 territorial ban on abortion – which Kari Lake supports – will be reinstated.
Kari Lake said of the ban, which has no exceptions for rape or incest, that she was “incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that’s already on the books […] it will prohibit abortion in Arizona […].”
In November, after she launched her campaign for Senate, Lake said her views on abortion “haven’t changed actually.” Kari Lake reiterated her support for the “draconian” pre-statehood ban passed before women had the right to vote.
“While the Arizona Supreme Court considers whether the dangerous abortion ban will be reinstated, we already know Kari Lake would ban abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and rip away Arizonans’ rights to make our own health care decisions,” said Olivia Taylor-Puckett, Senior Communications Advisor at the Arizona Democratic Party.
Kari Lake has said over and over again that she is “100% pro-life,” that abortion is an “execution” and “murder” and “almost a genocide” and the “ultimate sin”:
- In October, Kari Lake headlined a gala in Lubbock, Texas just days after Republican Lubbock county commissioners passed an ordinance seeking to prevent women from crossing state lines to access abortion care. Lake’s attendance – alongside County Commissioner Jason Corley who voted in favor of the ordinance, and anti-abortion extremist Mark Lee Dickson– shows she continues to support dangerous abortion bans with no exceptions for rape or incest.
- “Kari Lake wanted Arizona to pass ‘carbon copy’ of Texas abortion law at center of legal fight” in which Kate Cox petitioned a judge to grant her an exception from Texas’ abortion restrictions after her fetus was diagnosed with a fatal genetic abnormality, which forced Cox to seek care outside of Texas.
- When asked about the Texas abortion ban, an extreme law that allows for abortion “bounty hunters,” Lake said, “I will sign that in a heartbeat.”
- Lake said, “I believe in the Heartbeat Bill that Texas passed and this law in Texas […] I would sign it.”
- Lake has called abortion “murder” and “almost a genocide.”
- Before Roe v. Wade was overturned. Lake said, “I joined Congressman Gosar in praying for God’s guidance to the Supreme Court and an end to this national disgrace created under Roe v Wade.”
- Lake said, abortion is “not a choice that somebody gets to make […] That’s not a medical choice.”
- Lake said “I would very much support banning those types of abortion pills,” in reference to medical abortions, which have been proven safe.
- Lake said, “I am pro-life 100%.”
- Lake said, “I am pro-life 100%.”
- Lake said, “I am pro-life and I am 100% pro-life.”
