Arizona Republicans in Congress Vote Against Protecting Reproductive Freedom

As GOP leaders call to ban abortion nationally, every Arizona Republican in Congress voted against popular measures to guarantee every American’s freedom to make their own health care decisions

Today, all four Arizona Republicans in Congress voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act that would restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land, and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act that would protect women who travel to another state to get an abortion.

“After decades of pushing to overturn Roe v. Wade and to ban abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest, it’s no suprise that today, Arizona Republicans voted against legislation to protect reproductive freedom. Reps. Biggs, Gosar, Lesko, and Schweikert once again proved they do not represent the overwhelming majority of Arizonans who want access to safe, legal abortion,” said Arizona Democratic Party Spokesperson Aida Ross. “The stakes in November could not be higher: While Democrats are working to protect Arizonans’ rights and freedoms, Republicans want states to strip women of their rights and make it a crime to seek access to health care.”

Today’s vote comes after Republicans in Congress have increasingly called to pass a national abortion ban if they win a majority, which House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said he would support. And, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said it is “possible” the Senate could take up national abortion ban legislation. Here in Arizona, Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich is fighting to reinstate a 1901 pre-statehood law that criminalizes abortion at all stages of pregnancy and mandates jail time for anyone who facilitates an abortion.
