Kari Lake Continues Attacking People Who Seek and Support Abortion

PHOENIX– As we await the Pima County ruling that will determine whether Arizona’s 15-week ban on abortion or the 1901 ban on abortion will be the law of Arizona, we’re looking back on Kari Lake’s extreme stances on abortion and her onslaught against those who’ve had an abortion.

“Ghouls” and “liar” can be added to the long list of insulting names Kari Lake has thrown at women who have had abortions and people who support reproductive freedom. Over the weekend, the Lake Campaign attacked Katie Hobbs for sharing her personal experience with miscarriage and advocating for abortion access, calling her a “ghoul” and a “liar,” and by extension all women in the same position. Last week, Lake referred to people who seek abortion care as “executioners” and Lake has repeatedly called abortion “murder,” framing women who seek abortion care as murderers, saying, “I believe that taking the life of an unborn child is murder.”

As Lindsey Graham and the RGA push a radical plan to create a nationwide ban on abortion, Kari Lake has been consistently doubling down on her anti-abortion stances. As the Arizona Republic reported, “Lake has not budged from her staunch opposition to abortion,” despite a majority of Arizonans supporting access to abortion and it becoming a top issue in this election.

“Kari Lake doesn’t think twice about calling women who have abortions liars, ghouls, murderers or executioners — just for making health care decisions about their own bodies, “said Josselyn Berry, spokesperson for the Arizona Democratic Party. “Lake has proudly branded herself as the anti-choice, anti-abortion candidate in her campaign for governor, and has not wavered from her extreme positions.  If Kari Lake becomes governor, she will absolutely support and enforce the ban, endangering the lives of Arizonans and threatening doctors with jail time. Meanwhile her opponent Katie Hobbs has been and always will be a staunch supporter of reproductive freedom.”

A reminder on Kari Lake’s unwavering support for a total abortion ban:

She responded to the SCOTUS decision overturning Roe by saying she supports the 1901 Arizona law  criminalizing abortion without exceptions for rape and incest, and celebrated it again as a “great law” during a forum in February. In a July Republican primary debate, Lake unequivocally stated her support for Arizona’s Civil War era abortion ban that effectively outlaws abortion and requires prison time for doctors, saying she would support and enforce it. And shortly after becoming the GOP nominee for governor, Lake dodged a question from a reporter asking if she would advocate for “more restrictive abortion laws.”

She’s said “I am pro-life 100%. I’m against abortion,” opposing exceptions for rape and incest and the life of the woman. When asked if she supported exceptions for rape and incest, Lake said, “I don’t believe that any child should be killed in a mother’s womb” and that “abortion is the ultimate sin.” In a June interview on Fox News and in the GOP primary debate, Lake also said she supports banning abortion pills.
