Key points:

  • Arizona Republican Kari Lake, now running for Senate, recently said in a Space on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that she thinks Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell will be replaced as majority leader if she wins next November.
  • In a Space on October 20, about an hour into the conversation, Lake was asked what characteristics she’d like to see in a majority leader.
  • Lake responded by saying she wants to see a Senate majority leader who “wants to work with President Trump, isn’t constantly throwing roadblocks in his way, and doesn’t have a history of doing that, because we’re going to have to get busy fast.” She added that she wants to “get in there and get a bunch of people elected who are willing to work enthusiastically to get this turned around.”
  • “I think we’re going to have a change in leadership, frankly,” Lake continued. “I mean, I’m not here to cut down Mitch McConnell. But I think, you know, there’s been some health issues that we’ve seen, and listen, I hope they all get resolved. I don’t know what’s going on there. But we got to have somebody who’s got the fight left in him and kick it up there and do the job.”
  • “Well, everybody knows I’ve had disagreements with Mitch McConnell,” she said.
  • “I disagree with McConnell on many, many things,” she added, saying that she did support McConnell’s efforts on pushing through Supreme Court nominations and how he fought against Trump’s two impeachments.
  • But she has criticized McConnell in the past. During the homestretch of her gubernatorial campaign, Lake called McConnell “the old bat.” Trump has called McConnell “the old crow.”
  • Ahead of the first primary debate in 2024, Lake questioned McConnell’s mental fitness after he froze at the podium of a Senate press conference
  • “There’s something going on right now with him. We saw it, I don’t know what it is,” she said to former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon on his podcast. “There’s something medically — when you freeze up like that and they have to, like take your body and move it away from the podium. Something’s going on there, and he’s gonna make all the decisions about who represents the people of Arizona?”
