Congressional Corral: Have Arizona Republicans “Herd” the News? Arizona is the Next Abortion Battleground
ARIZONA- We have a lot of news to share with you, so let’s saddle right in! It’s Friday, so here’s a round up (corral) of what our Arizona Republicans are up to:
- Rep. David Schweikert (AZ-01): This week, the Wall Street Journal declared that “Arizona is the next Abortion Battleground” and called Rep. Schweikert “[…] one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the country in part because of his anti-abortion stance.” Voters will remember that “Schweikert co-sponsored a bill before Roe was overturned that in effect would have banned abortions nationwide.”
- Rep. Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06): Similar attacks were lodged at Rep. Ciscomani this week, with Cronkite News noting that Ciscomani and Schweikert’s tight races are going to be determined by turnout- and with abortion being on the ballot, their extreme stances are going to be a motivator for Democrats and Independents, who are resoundingly pro-choice: “Ciscomani cosponsored H.R. 7, which would prohibit the use of federal funding for abortions, while Schweikert has voted to ban access to mifepristone, a widely used abortion medication.“
- Rep. Eli Crane (AZ-02): A constituent has a career change idea for Rep. Crane! In a LTE, a AZ-02 resident writes: “Am I the only one that is totally confused (but not surprised) that our representative Eli Crane calls the deadly conflict involving the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “a land dispute in Eastern Europe”?! Gosh, he should be teaching history. Think how easy (and intellectually lazy) stating that WW I and WW II were ‘land disputes in Europe’. Great grasp of intricate, complicated issues Rep. Crane.“
- Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05): Rep. Andy Biggs is laser-focused on delivering results for Arizonans, which is why this week…he called for contempt charges against Eric Swalwell? In a Fox News exclusive, Andy Biggs told the outlet that he thinks Eric Swalwell should be charged with content for skipping the deposition of Hunter Biden. If we could list issues important to Arizonans, it would definitely go: Contempt charges for Eric Swalwell, good-paying union jobs, and protecting Arizonans’s water future.
- Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-09): This week in an Arizona Republic opinion piece, writer EJ Montini outlines Paul Gosar’s long and cozy relationship with White Nationalist Nick Fuentes. This isn’t the first time that Gosar has aligned and praised White Supremacist and Nazi-affiliated right-wing media- you can read more about his ties to White Nationalist outlets and figures here.
- Rep. Debbie Lesko (AZ-08): Despite mifepristone being a safe reproductive health drug, Debbie Lesko tweeted out praise for the Supreme Court announcement that it would hear a case to ban the use of the drug: “I hope they make the right decision. Mifepristone is a dangerous drug that should never have been given the green light in the first place.”
- BONUS! Surprise! Every single Arizona Republican voted to start an impeachment inquiry against President Biden. Rather than working for Arizonans who care about increasing opportunity in the valley and decreasing the cost of living, Arizona Republicans are focused on a Donald Trump-orchestrated campaign tactic.
