“On Wednesday violent right-wing insurrectionists laid siege to the U.S. Capitol in the name of the President resulting in five deaths, including a federal police officer. At the same time, mobs across the country cheered and stoked this violence at Government buildings across the country, including Arizona. Just outside the Arizona State Capitol, we witnessed radicals brandish weapons and even erect a guillotine. This mob could be seen banging on the doors of the Capitol, where they struck a window until the glass broke, then gleefully cheered the illegal acts of insurrection in D.C.
The Arizona Legislature begins its work on Monday. Amid this wave of sedition, we call on our Republican colleagues in the Legislature, Governor Ducey, and our Republican counterparts at the State Party to join us in this demand for safety, calm and peaceful normalcy.
Acts of intimidation, insurrection, and domestic terrorism have no place in our state and do not reflect our nation’s values. Arizona voters – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents – sent their elected officials to the Legislature to serve them. Anyone who would seek to threaten that solemn duty represents a threat to our democracy and our society.
Democrats of the State Legislature look forward to beginning their work of serving all Arizonans on Monday and Democrats across this state welcome the peaceful start to this new session.”
