PHOENIX – Today the Ducey-appointed Commission on Appellate Court Appointments met to vote on the fifth Independent finalist for the 2021 Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC), completing the list of 25 finalists eligible for appointment to the commission. With the addition of Independent finalist Megan Carollo, the pool of 25 candidates is composed only of:
- 7 women (28%)
- 4 people of color (16%)
The roster of five Independents, which includes zero people of color, includes several applicants with recent histories of partisan political activity.
Arizona Democratic Party Chair Felecia Rotellini issued the following statement:
“The lack of equitable representation on the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments in a state as diverse as Arizona is unacceptable. A list of potential IRC candidates that is more than 80% white and 70% male does not represent Arizona.
There is no reason to rush the selection of candidates for the IRC. This process has been run contrary to both the letter and spirit of the Arizona Constitution, which does not require the submission of a list of finalists until January 2021.
Once again, we urge the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments to go back to the drawing board and fix these glaring inequities. The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments must reassess and re-open the selection process, and interview the many highly qualified women and people of color who were not given the opportunity to speak in support of their application. There is too much at stake for a rushed and flawed process, Arizona deserves better. The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments owes it to Arizonans to get this right.”
