PHOENIX – There are just six days until the voters of CD06 elect Dr. Hiral Tipirneni to replace incumbent Republican David Schweikert. Rep. Schweikert has voted against the best interests of his constituents for years and completely betrayed their trust when he violated at least eleven House Ethics rules. Dr. Tipirneni is overwhelmingly the best choice for the families of the Sixth District. Her decade of service in the Emergency Room treating families from all across Maricopa County taught her to work with others and solve complex problems. She is a proven leader who will bring her strong moral character and tradition of service with her to Congress. There are countless points of contrast between Dr. Tipirneni and the morally-bankrupt David Schweikert. Here are just a few:
Schweikert voted time and time again to repeal the Affordable Care Act and eliminate protections for those with pre-existing conditions. He also voted to keep prescription drug prices high—and that’s not even all of it. He voted to cut benefits for those who already qualify for Social Security and to raise the retirement age. He also voted to create an “age tax” on older constituents.
Dr. Tipirneni will expand the Affordable Care Act and protect Medicare. She will fight for a healthcare system where Arizonans have the freedom to choose the health insurance plan that’s best for them and supports a robust Medicare buy-in option to drive down prices.
Rep. Schweikert’s decisions have devastated middle-class Arizona families. He supported the GOP tax bill that raised taxes on the middle class, voted to slash the corporate tax rate, and voted to eliminate taxes on overseas earnings. His actions might benefit his big-money corporate backers, but they harm middle-class families and stunt local economic growth. Dr. Tipirneni is committed to simplifying the tax code and closing loopholes to create a tax code that is fairer to middle-class families, small businesses, and retirees.
Perhaps worst of all, Schweikert was unanimously reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee at the end of a two-year investigation after he admitted to eleven violations. The committee’s report uncovered a disturbing pattern of Schweikert using taxpayer-funded staff to raise money for his campaign, perform personal tasks like babysitting, and pay for things like his first-class flight upgrades, dry-cleaning, and expensive meals. Schweikert agreed to pay $50,000 in fines as a result of his wrongdoing – one of the most expensive fines in Congressional history. Despite Schweikert’s excuses and watered-down, dismissive explanations, the House Ethics report stated “The weight of evidence does not support Representative Schweikert’s contention that these fabrications were the result of ‘inadvertent’ errors,”
In clear contrast to Schweikert, Tipirneni will bring integrity, honesty, and accountability to Congress. She believes in protecting taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars and keeping the government accountable to the people—not corporate backers, lobbyist pals, or party bosses. While Schweikert might be the most corrupt member in Congress, he’s certainly not the only one with a penchant for ethical impropriety. Tipirneni aims to increase government accountability and transparency and will root out all forms of corruption in Washington.
“Rep. Schweikert violated his oath to Arizonans through his ethics violations and his disastrous voting record that jeopardized people’s health care and risked their wellbeing,” said Matt Grodsky, Arizona Democratic Party spokesman, “Dr. Tipirneni’s career as an ER physician proves that she is devoted to service and that she puts a premium on facts rather than partisanship. She will represent all of her constituents regardless of party affiliation. Most notably, she will bring trustworthiness back to CD06. Dr. Tipirneni is the leader Arizonans deserve and they will send her to Congress on Tuesday.”
