“Yesterday we witnessed a dark day in American history. As night fell on the U.S. Capitol, law enforcement was still working to clear insurrectionists from the grounds. But, today is a new day. Congress has officially certified the electoral college votes for the 2020 Presidential election. President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris were lawfully elected and will be inaugurated on January 20th.
It is not lost on Arizonans that the assault on our Capitol disrupted the debate over the objection to the certification of Arizona’s Electoral College vote. While some objections to Arizona’s certification persisted last night, there were ultimately several Republicans who withdrew their support for the meritless objection and put the will of the People and the Constitution first.
Americans have always been resilient and faced adversity with the intent to overcome. Throughout our history, we have constantly beaten the odds and come back stronger. We did that again in the aftermath of yesterday’s egregious acts and the defilement of our sacred Capitol. We thank our elected officials for quickly reconvening and getting the job done.
I commend our Democratic elected officials in the U.S. House and Senate for their steadfast commitment to our Democratic Republic and their courage throughout a terrifying ordeal.
Despite the violence and obstruction, Democracy won last night. The perpetrators of yesterday’s attack lost. And in thirteen days America will usher in a new President. We will turn the page on this sinister chapter in our history and our resilience will continue to prevail.”
