Release: On Tax Day 2020, AZ Dems Blast Trump’s Broken Promises To Arizona’s Working Families

PHOENIX – Today, the Arizona Democratic Party marked Tax Day 2020 by slamming Donald Trump for his record of broken promises to Arizona. In 2017, Trump pledged that his signature tax bill would create jobs and give relief to working families. Instead, the Trump tax scam handed out massive giveaways to the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of hardworking Arizonans.

BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S BROKEN PROMISES TO ARIZONA

Promise: “I know how the tax code works better than anyone and I’m going to fix it so it’s fair and just works for you, works for you.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Prescott AZ, 10/4/16]

Reality: Trump’s tax scam proved to be a windfall for massive corporations while leaving Arizona’s working families with the short end of the stick. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), the Trump tax cuts are “tilted dramatically in favor of the richest Arizona residents while the tax increases fall more heavily on lower-income Arizona families.”

Promise: “We’re going to cut taxes for the middle class, make the tax code simpler and more fair for everyday Americans […]” [Trump, 9/27/17]

Reality: Trump’s tax scam hiked taxes on more than 10 million families, including 194,749 families in Arizona alone, while handing out massive giveaways to powerful corporations.

Reality: It also allowed corporations and billionaires to pay a lower tax rate than working families, and made economic inequality worse.

Promise: “At the core of my contract is my plan to bring back our jobs.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Phoenix, AZ, 10/29/16]

Reality: Trump’s tax scam actually incentivizes corporations to ship even more jobs overseas.

Reality: As of June, more than 1.6 million Arizonans were collecting some form of unemployment benefits in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. Despite this, Trump and his Republican enablers have failed to extend enhanced unemployment benefits that expire at the end of the month, even though assistance will end earlier for Arizonans.

“Donald Trump is delinquent in keeping his promises to the people of Arizona,” said Matt Grodsky, Arizona Democratic Party spokesman, “His signature accomplishment in office is jamming through a tax scam that lined the pockets of his wealthy donors and corporate special interests while leaving Arizona’s working families behind. Arizonans are still struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic due to Trump’s failed coronavirus response.  We cannot afford another four years of Trump in the White House and that’s precisely why we will vote him out come November.”
