My dad
Happy Father’s Day, Arizona!
This is a photo of me and my dad, Rick. I’m sure you see similar photos being posted today by friends and family — but I want to tell you a quick story about why my dad is my hero.
My dad gave me my love for politics. More than that, he taught me how to carry myself and what it meant to be a good person. I’ve always worked to be as good of a son as he is a father.
My dad is not only a good father, but also a patriotic American and a proud gay man. So when, in my native Indiana, then-Governor Mike Pence supported a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in 2014, I knew I had to act.
Luckily, I knew the man who was building a grassroots opposition movement against this hateful ballot measure — my dad. Using the same kind of organizing tactics I’m deploying here in Arizona, my dad stopped Mike Pence and his Republican friends in their tracks, defeating the measure before it even went to the ballot.
My dad knows what it takes to run a successful campaign. And he knows what’s at risk if we lose.
The battle we have ahead of us in Arizona is not going to be easy. But, if there’s anything I’ve learned from my dad, it’s that the fight is worth it when you’re on the right side of history.
