Lea Marquez Peterson Welcomes Paul Ryan to Tucson, Doubles Down on Medicare-Cutting Wing of Republican Party
PHOENIX — House Speaker Paul Ryan, leader behind the recently passed GOP tax plan and famous advocate for cutting Medicare and Social Security, is in Tucson this week stumping for Lea Marquez Peterson.
Ryan’s tax plan that was recently rammed through Congress along party lines rewards corporations and wealthy Americans while undermining access to health care for Arizonans. Despite claims that the plan would pay for itself, estimates show that it is doubling the federal deficit.
Ryan proposed reducing the budget by making cuts to Medicare and Social Security. Any change to Medicare and Social Security would affect nearly 200,000 Arizonans who reside in the Second Congressional District.
Ryan’s visit is more proof that Peterson is embracing unpopular Republican policy proposals. Peterson already welcomed the endorsement of the Congressman Steve Stivers, who recently called for paying for the GOP tax plan by putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block.
“Lea Peterson has made clear she’s aligned with Washington Republicans who put corporations ahead of working Arizona families,” said Les Braswell, communications director for the Arizona Democratic Party. “If she’s elected to Congress, she’ll vote with her party leaders to cut Medicare and Social Security. Arizonans can’t afford to send her to Congress.”
