GOP Still Worrying About Martha McSally

More Republicans Are Convinced That Martha McSally Can’t Win

Arizona GOP consultant: “There’s no love for her […] and she’s going to lose. I’ve already heard people talk about who’s going to run next cycle for Senate.”

PHOENIX — With less than three months to Arizona’s GOP U.S. Senate primary, national and Arizona Republicans are once again highlighting Martha McSally’s weaknesses as the first Arizona Republican to lose a U.S. Senate race in 30 years:

An Arizona GOP consultant told McClatchy that McSally is “going to lose,” and may be a “drag on Trump”:

  • “For some Republicans, it’s the Senate race between Mark Kelly, the former astronaut, and appointed Sen. Martha McSally, that is becoming more worrisome than Arpaio. One top Republican in the state argued that McSally is a drag on Trump because she lacks an enthusiastic following that can help whip up volunteers.”

  • “‘There’s no love for her,’  this consultant said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of his position in the party. ‘Each side is going to piss away $50-$60 million and she’s going to lose. I’ve already heard people talk about who’s going to run next cycle for Senate.’”

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel told Fox News that McSally needs Trump’s help to avoid a repeat of her 2018 loss:

  • “With Trump on the ballot — somebody like Martha McSally […] she is going to need him to win that Senate seat in Arizona.”

National and Arizona Republicans have been sounding the alarm about McSally for months. And McSally was even booed at January’s Arizona GOP state committee meeting and February’s Trump rally in Phoenix.
