Blake Breakdown: The Triple Double(down)

PHOENIX — Welcome to the latest edition of the ‘Blake Breakdown’ — a weekly roundup of the latest news on Blake Masters, the “fringe,” “extreme,” and “dangerous” Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.

Known for his divisive rhetoric, far-right positions, and Twitter temper tantrums, Masters is a risk Arizonans cannot afford. From now until November 8th, the Arizona Democratic Party’s ‘Blake Breakdown’ is here to help you keep track of the latest reason why he has no business serving in the U.S. Senate.

Here’s what you missed this week:

DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW YOU TALK LIKE THAT?: Last weekend, Masters doubled down on his belief that the gender pay gap is a “fake left-wing narrative,” mansplaining to a female police officer. The Tucson PD officer, who noted that she wears a bulletproof vest every day, brought Masters to task for saying women are paid less than men because they’re not the ones who do the “risky” and “most dangerous jobs.” Spoiler alert: Masters, unsurprisingly, didn’t do himself any favors and stood firm in his misogyny — because if anyone knows the impact of the gender pay gap, it’s definitely…Blake Masters.

WOMEN ARE SUFFERING, AND MASTERS IS SILENT: It’s been nine days since Arizona reinstated its 1864 abortion ban, outlawing abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and mandating prison sentences for providers. Ever since, Blake Masters has remained silent, hiding (again) and trying to pretend that he didn’t previously say he would support nationalizing the ban. Unlike Masters, we believe Arizona women deserve to know about his plan to ban abortion across America, so we held a press conference to make sure Arizonans everywhere heard all about his support for the century-old law that has left Arizona women with fewer rights than ever before in the state’s history.

A RECIPE FOR DISASTER: Last week, the Arizona Republic published a report exposing Masters’ time on the Trump Transition Team, and it turns out mixing money, power, and Blake Masters doesn’t bode well for anyone. The TL;DR: Masters tried to use his role on the team to appoint an FDA head who would nix crucial clinical trials and greenlight potentially dangerous drugs — all to pad the pockets of big dollar pharma investors like his mentor and personal campaign financier, Peter Thiel. Ultimately, Masters’ didn’t get his pick, which is why we’re all ok — for now anyway. Fool us once, shame on you, but fool us twice, shame on us and Blake Masters will go for broke, doing irreparable harm to Arizona.

“I WOULDN’T TRUST HIM AS FAR AS I COULD THROW HIM”: From Masters’ plans to institute a national abortion ban and privatize Social Security to his litany of comments attacking our military, blaming Black people for gun violence, and calling World War Two “unjust,” it’s not hard to figure out why the New York Times reports he’s “strain[ing] to win over Arizona Independents.” This is bad news for Blake as Independents make up an all-important third of Arizona’s electorate. He may have a hoard of white extremists, Neo-Nazis, and conspiracy theorists to back him, but Twitter and Gab aren’t real life, and no amount of “based” tweets can buy you real votes.

WHO NEEDS NEW FRIENDS WHEN YOURS ARE REALLY, REALLY RICH?: To finish out the week (and FEC quarter), Masters headed back to California on Friday night for a fundraiser, doubling down on his dependence on his Big Tech puppet master, Peter Thiel. Making new friends can be hard, but it’s even harder when you’re such a “fringe” and “extreme” GOP candidate that even the Minority Leader has noted your poor “candidate quality.” Like usual, Masters is falling back on his billionaire benefactor who’s already $15 million deep in this Senate race — so much so that Thiel will be on the ground in Arizona for yet another Masters fundraiser next week. We bet Peter is really wishing he’d taught Blake how to fish fundraise right about now…

A WHOLE LOT OF TALK: Despite recent, damning reports from Vice News and the Arizona Republic that revealed Masters’ history of disrespecting our military, Masters isn’t backing down. In an interview this week, Masters confirmed that he does indeed “have a lot of criticism for the top layer of military brass,” and doubled down on his attacks, sharpening his weapons aimed at our own American servicemembers. Notably, Masters has never worn a uniform but he sure has a lot of critiques…but like a Tucson-area veteran recently pointed out, it’s not too late for the 36-year-old to put his money where his mouth is and stop by a local recruiting station.
