Arizona Brings the Heat: Delegates Emphasize Working Class Arizonans on Day 1 of the Convention

August 20th, 2024
ARIZONA– Yesterday was the first day of the Democratic national convention in Chicago. With yesterday’s theme being “For the People,” Arizona Delegates and Democrats flooded the airwaves with how Kamala Harris is moving Arizona forward for working class families and their communities. It’s the Democratic Convention, so you know Arizona is bringing the heat.

WATCH/LISTEN:

Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano (Telemundo): Sin hispanos no hay este negocio. No hay nada. Entonces sabemos que tenemos que pelear por el voto hispano.”

Senator Mark Kelly (KTAR): We don’t need four more years of Donald Trump. Tax cuts for billionaires while leaving the middle class behind — we don’t need that in a leader.

Mayor Kate Gallego (KTAR): I’m excited to see history happen. There’s a real excitement around that. But no one votes for president based on gender. We want results. We want someone who will fight for us, who will make sure that fewer people in our community are struggling to pay for their diabetes medication, who will make sure that we are well-represented abroad. So it does matter to me […] It matters from that perspective that a little girl can grow up and say she can be anything she wants in the United States.

Mayor Regina Romero (Tucson Sentinel): Vice President Harris is now carrying the torch. And she and Governor Walz are committed to delivering results for the American people. Then you have Donald Trump. His extreme agenda is working against everyday Americans. He is fighting for big oil, big pharma, big banks; but most of all, most of all […] he is fighting for himself.”

Dutch Martinez, U.A local 469 (ABC 15): For me, it’s about the apprenticeship and the kids in the future, right? Somebody’s got to pay for my retirement one day.“

Daniel Herandez (Telemundo): Es un momento donde empecé en el 2008 y duramos 16 años y ahora se ve como si vamos a tener la oportunidad de elegir a la primera mujer como presidenta de los estados unidos.

Joshua Polacheck (KGUN 9): The sense of patriotism and service to our country embodies everything I do and I think it embodies everything that Vice President Harris and coach Governor Walz are bringing to the ticket.”

READ:

Mayor Regina Romero (KOLD): “Tucson is the second-largest city in Arizona and will contribute greatly to handing the state and winning the state of Arizona for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. So we do matter as a city, that is in a state that really is a battleground state.”

Dhruv Rebba (The Copper Courier): “I am committed to sending Harris back to the White House, this time as our first South Asian president. Throughout her career, she fought for young people—calling out corporate greed and signing the most significant investment in climate change in our nation’s history. While former President Donald Trump and vice presidential candidate JD Vance are trying to move our country backward, Harris has a vision that moves Arizona forward.”

Llama Habern (Cronkite): “How excited everyone is in general is very motivating, very encouraging.”

Deja Foxx (Fox10): “People my age are making big decisions about our lives, and we deserve a president who has our backs. Rights are on the line this election, from the top all the way to the bottom of the ballot, especially in places like Arizona.”
