Arizona Brings the Heat: Delegates Emphasize the Future on Day 2 of the Convention

August 21st, 2024
ARIZONAYesterday was the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, with the theme “A bold vision for America’s future.” Arizona Delegates and Democrats flooded the airwaves with enthusiasm for how Kamala Harris has delivered results that move our state forward and create a better life for future generations. It’s the Democratic Convention, so you know Arizona is bringing the heat.

WATCH/LISTEN:

Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano (PBS): “We’re going to continue to do what we do. Get the message out and make sure that folks understand the differences between what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz offer Americans and what Trump and J. D. Vance are offering. Two completely different futures for our country. One that is a future to protect our rights and expand our rights and one that is Project 2025. That’s an attack on everything that we believe in. “

Senator Mark Kelly (KTVK): I believe Kamala Harris is going to win Arizona and be the next president of the United States, but we have some work to do. We have to turn that enthusiasm into people showing up and voting.

Senator Mark Kelly (12 News): Everybody is really excited. I mean, this is about the future of our country. This is about a new leader who’s going to take this country forward. The other option is very clear to me, the other option is Donald Trump, you know, just dragging us back to the past.”

Mayor John Giles (MSNBC):I’ll be reaching out to the political middle and, sharing my experience as a mayor under, under Both the Biden and the Trump administrations. Mr. Trump made a lot of lofty promises, to me and to everybody else. […]. He’ll say what you want him to say. But, the Biden administration delivered some amazing legislation that brought billions of dollars of infrastructure to cities like mine. My city is booming right now. Every week I’m going to ribbon cuttings and ground breakings, in large part to the investment in infrastructure that’s come under the Biden administration.”

Shantenae Robinson (PBS):Harris now becoming the […] candidate for president is personal for me. I’m a young black woman, 32 years old. And I, like I tell everyone, it’s almost like you’re re envisioning what your future could be. When you look at the TV and you say, mom, I want to be this when I grow up. And now I’m like, maybe I could be president when I grow up.”

Darrell Parrish Bakeman (KVOA): “We are showing up to let the rest of the world know and remember who we really are. To raise my hand and say, I’m from Arizona and I pledge 85 delegate points for the next President of the United States, to articulate I was involved in the process to elect the next President of the United States is the greatest gift I could give.

Governor Katie Hobbs (KJZZ):  “Just like were issues in 2022 when I ran for governor and won, Arizonans want things to be more affordable, they want a response on the border, and they want to protect our fundamental freedoms.”

Mayor Regina Romero (AZCentral): “We want to make sure that Arizonans and Latinos throughout the country, and every voter in this country understand that a Harris-Walz presidency will fortify our economy, will help working families, will secure Medicare Social Security, will make sure that public education is funded versus everything against that with Donald Trump.”

Senator Priya Sundareshan (Cronkite): “She is so qualified and she can be a historic president by being the first female president, first Black woman president, and first Indian American president. Arizona women feel very excited. People are excited, all of that really energizes voters, and she is going to get so many of us in our communities engaged.”

Gabriella Cázares-Kelly (Cronkite): “She can break the glass ceiling. She has the support of Arizona women, men, and nonbinary. She has a lot of support everywhere.”

Stephanie Grisham (Tucson Sentinel): “Kamala Harris tells the truth, respects the American people, and she has my vote. Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them basement-dwellers. He has no empathy, no morals, no fidelity to the truth.”
