ADP Statement On Democratic Legislative Leaders’ IRC Lawsuit

PHOENIX – Today House and Senate Democratic Leaders filed a lawsuit challenging the eligibility of two finalists for the Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC). The action filed early this morning in Maricopa Superior Court seeks to remove registered lobbyist Thomas Loquvam and recent Trump rally host Robert Wilson from the list of five Independent finalists.

Arizona Democratic Party Chair Felecia Rotellini issued the following statement:

“The Arizona Democratic Party stands behind House Democratic Leader Fernandez and Senate Democratic Leader Bradley in their challenge of these two “independent” finalists. At every step of this process, Democrats have urged Governor Ducey and his Commission on Appellate Court Appointments (C.A.C.A.) to uphold the intent and spirit of the Arizona Constitution, and this request has been ignored.

From the inexcusable disregard for the Constitutional mandate of diverse representation on C.A.C.A. to the exclusion of highly-qualified IRC applicants of color and women and the inclusion of so-called “independent” candidates with clear, documented partisan political activity, the Governor has thumbed his nose at the State Constitution and Arizona voters. Speaker Bowers’ selection of the first IRC member yesterday – months before required – ignores precedent and the letter and spirit of the Constitution. The IRC process, thus far, is another shameful example of a Republican subversive attempt to power grab.

In 2000, Arizona voters chose to take redistricting powers out of the hands of politicians and entrust that sacred duty to an independent citizens commission. The Arizona Democratic Party is committed to doing all we can to uphold the will of Arizona voters, and to fight for a fair and independent redistricting process in 2021.”
