Top conservative calls on Horne to step aside

PHOENIX -- In Sunday's Arizona Republic, respected conservative columnist Bob Robb called for Attorney General Tom Horne to step aside from the Fiesta Bowl investigation. Last week, however, Horne derided a similar call by AZ Dem Chairman Andrei Cherny as "idiotic."

Horne's juvenile response only reinforces Cherny's (and now Robb's) point about Horne's conflict of interest in this corruption case. Someone as politically connected to the Fiesta Bowl as Horne, and whose political ambitions are as apparent as Horne's, will be unable to give the public any confidence in a fair and thorough investigation.

Here's an excerpt from Robb's column:

The Arizona Republic

Attorney General Tom Horne derided a call for him to appoint an independent prosecutor regarding Fiesta Bowl matters as "idiotic." That's an intemperate response to a reasonable and important concern.

...

Horne is, in fact, a highly ambitious politician who, throughout his political career, has always had an eye out for the next office.

...

The question isn't whether Horne has a legal conflict. The question is whether Horne's interests as a politician jeopardize the integrity and public confidence in his office's actions on Fiesta Bowl matters.

I think they do.
