The case for Arizona treasurer

Andrei Cherny vs. Douglas Ducey

Every day until Election Day, we will lay out the clear choices in Arizona's statewide races*

PHOENIX – In the race for Arizona treasurer, the choice between Andrei Cherny and Douglas Ducey is clear.

Andrei Cherny:

Cherny is a tough criminal prosecutor and nationally recognized economic policy expert. A seven-year U.S. Navy reserve officer, he pledges to be "the taxpayers' bulldog" and tackle the challenges confronting Arizona's economy.

Cherny has what it takes to lead Arizona toward a stronger future:

  • As an assistant attorney general, Cherny successfully prosecuted financial fraud, Ponzi schemes and corruption, helping keep Arizonans safe from crooks and scammers.
  • Cherny has advised some of the nation's most prominent businesses, including Microsoft, KB Homes, Advanced Micro Devices, and Cablevision. He understands what does and doesn't work in corporate America.
  • Cherny pledges to go after those who misuse government funds. In fact, he put local officials on notice by promising to conduct top-to-bottom audits of Arizona government and weed out waste and corruption.[Arizona Daily Sun, 9/30/10]
  • Cherny pledges to work across party lines to use the powers of the office to make safer investments that spur new job growth and help make Arizona "the Solar State."

Cherny's proven successes in the financial and legal sectors are exactly what Arizona needs in its next treasurer.

Douglas Ducey:

Ducey has several well-documented failures to obey the law or play by the rules. Ducey is in it for himself, whether it's business or politics:

  • Ducey skipped out on paying property taxes for his Paradise Valley mansion in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He didn't bother to pay up until the day after he ran for office. [The Arizona Republic, 8/8/10]
  • As CEO of Cold Stone Creamery, Ducey personally profited as franchisees took $181 million of taxpayer-backed loans from the federal government and paid fees and other costs back into his company. But his business model forced 31 percent of their loans into default -- one of the nation's highest default rates. [Arizona Daily Star, 10/6/10]
  • Government records show Ducey has failed to appear in court 16 different times in the last four years for legal violations. The city of Scottsdale was even forced to hire a collection agency to get Ducey to pay his fine. [Arizona Court Report]
  • Ducey was the only treasurer candidate to refuse to provide a full, detailed financial disclosure as required by law, and he only amended his forms after Cherny's calls for full disclosure were reported in the media. Ducey had listed only a revocable trust under his investments without providing any details on the stocks, hedge funds, and other financial interests he holds. [The Arizona Republic, 9/2/10]
  • Ducey opposes a job creation plan that would invest Arizona tax dollars in strong Arizona companies who will create jobs here at home. Ducey would rather invest our state funds in Wall Street than in Arizona. [East Valley Tribune, 9/29/10]

Ducey's numerous ethical and financial lapses aren't accidents -- they're a pattern. Ducey can’t be trusted as Arizona's treasurer.
