The case for Arizona governor

Attorney General Terry Goddard vs. Gov. Jan Brewer

Every day until Election Day, we will lay out the clear choices in Arizona's statewide races*

PHOENIX – In the race for Arizona governor, the choice between Attorney General Terry Goddard and Gov. Jan Brewer is clear.

Terry Goddard:

As attorney general, he has compiled an impressive record of keeping Arizona safe, successfully prosecuting criminals and cartel leaders, cracking down on elder abuse and scam artists, and winning civil settlements in cases on border security and mortgage fraud. He recently received the highest honor from the National Association of Attorneys General. And as mayor of Phoenix, Goddard led the city's efforts to strengthen law enforcement and launch nationally recognized efforts in economic development.

We can trust Terry Goddard to stand up for us:

  • Goddard succeeded in taking on predatory payday lenders and was a leading voice in driving them out of the state.
  • Goddard succeeded in sharply lowering the number of meth labs in our communities and helped cut meth use in half among many age groups.
  • Goddard succeeded in reaching a historic $94 million settlement with Western Union that provides substantial new border security resources to help the four Southwest border states combat illegal activity and criminal cartels.

As governor, he would make job creation his top priority and would fight to protect and support our schools. Goddard believes education is an investment in Arizona's economic future. This is the right leadership for a stronger Arizona.

Jan Brewer:

As governor, she has failed to focus on the right priorities, instead choosing to side with special interest lobbyists. In fact, both her governing and campaign offices are overrun with lobbyists. Brewer's "Jenga" approach to the budget has left it more than $800 million out of balance. She has shown rampant hypocrisy in taking credit for job creation that comes from federal stimulus funds.

Jan Brewer has failed at every level:

  • Brewer failed to keep us safe, leaving the job to private prisons with no accountability. The result of this approach had tragic consequences after the Kingman prison break.
  • Brewer failed our kids, slashing school budgets and eliminating all-day kindergarten. She even tried to kick tens of thousands of children off of health care.
  • Brewer failed to focus on job creation until right before the election -- again, nearly all her announcements have been due to federal stimulus funds -- but jobs should have been her top priority upon taking office nearly two years ago.
  • Brewer's reckless and inaccurate comments about crime and beheadings in Arizona came at the worst possible time for our state, damaging its reputation nationally and threatening its already struggling tourism industry.

Failed leadership. Wrong priorities. It's time to fire Jan Brewer.
