Statement on U.S. Senate vote to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Don Bivens, Arizona Democratic Party chair, issued the following statement in response to the repeal of the military's longstanding Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy:

“The Senate's action today to repeal the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy strengthens our national security. It is a victory not only because it rights a wrong, but because it reflects the will of the people. This effort caps a 17-year struggle for fairness and justice on behalf of brave Americans who should be able serve in our military without regard to sexual orientation. The president, the secretary of Defense, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, as well as a majority of the American people and a majority of our service members, supported this repeal. We are thrilled that this outdated and discriminatory policy will soon be a relic of the past."
