Statement on Brewer's call for special session to impeach citizen volunteers

Andrei Cherny, Arizona Democratic Party chairman, gave this statement in response to Gov. Jan Brewer's call for a Tuesday special session to impeach citizen volunteers on the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission:

"Governor Brewer's power grab is a clear abuse of the powers of her office. The voters created the Independent Redistricting Commission to keep politicians away from these decisions and so people could have a voice. The volunteer commissioners have drawn maps with bipartisan support that make small steps in giving independents more of a say. Their only crime is not kowtowing to Republican leaders.

"Editorials have roundly condemned Brewer's overreach, but she is as shameless as she is reckless. And the GOP supermajority believes it is accountable to no one. It is now up to the people of Arizona to make their voices heard. Call your lawmakers at the Capitol right now and demand they respect the will of the voters and protect the independence of this commission before it's too late."
