Press sees through Brewer's redistricting stunt

Republicans can't spin partisan attempt to sabotage commission

The Republican senators thinking of siding with Jan Brewer and voting to impeach the Independent Redistricting Commission should take note of the terrible press the governor's ploy has received. Brewer's attempt to take redistricting out of the hands of a voter-approved citizen commission and give it to entrenched political incumbents is exactly why Arizona voted for an independent commission in the first place. The overwhelmingly negative coverage shows how firmly Arizona stands against the governor and her GOP allies.

Here is just a sample of the headlines:

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Brewer's threat against officials oversteps office
ARIZONA DAILY STAR: Brewer, GOP like a greedy kid at pinata
ARIZONA DAILY SUN: Another citizen initiative hijacked
THE DAILY BEAST: Jan Brewer's sleazy power grab
ROBERT ROBB: Brewer's map-panel attack unjustified
ARIZONA PUBLIC MEDIA: Redistricting independent? Hardly
ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Arizona redistricting panel: Brewer undermining process

So we have to ask -- just how far are Arizona Republicans willing to follow Brewer down such an unpopular path?
