Gosar backers, can you spare a dime?

Freshman GOP congressman struggling with fiscal responsibility

PHOENIX – Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar evidently can’t walk his own talk on fiscal responsibility. His recent fundraising report showed an abysmal fundraising effort that lags his congressional peers and predecessors, and it also shows outstanding debts that surpass his cash on hand by nearly $20,000.

On Tuesday, the Yellow Sheet Report wrote about Gosar’s embarrassing fundraising, noting that “there is unease in the hallways of national GOP groups over Gosar’s future as a congressman, given his district’s tight voter registration,” and quoting a source saying “this report signals to the other party that you’re vulnerable."

And Gosar deserves to be vulnerable, not only because of his fiscal failures in the political realm but for those in his personal finances. Gosar is a millionaire who was chronically late on his taxes for years and had to pay thousands in penalties.[AZ Fact Check, 10/21/10]

“Paul Gosar talks a big story about fiscal responsibility, but he can’t seem to run a balanced budget within his own campaign,” said Luis Heredia, Arizona Democratic Party executive director. “And when you factor in his chronic problems with taxes, the question is clear: Why should Arizona voters trust him with their own tax dollars?"
