Flake's objection to budget deal could shut down government

Another example of how GOP extremism hurts Arizona

PHOENIX – An objection from U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake could kill a carefully crafted budget deal and shut down the federal government, according to The Washington Post.

The Post identified Flake as the only Republican who has failed to provide assurances that he won’t sink the deal. The leading national newspaper reported “[t]he entire [budget] deal could be thrown into disarray ... if even a single House member returns to Washington on Thursday and objects to the voice vote.” [Source: The Washington Post, Sept. 27, 2011]

Flake appears to be flanking hard to the right as he faces a primary in his run for the United States Senate.

“The idea that Jeff Flake is willing to stop Social Security checks and shut down basic services to pull a campaign stunt is unconscionable, and it shows he’s not interested in representing Arizona,” said Luis Heredia, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party.
