Brewer's grand(standing) finale
Today's publicity stunt in California caps the end of shameful campaign
PHOENIX – As governor, Jan Brewer didn't need to go to San Francisco today. It was a procedural hearing about SB1070. She sat in the audience. She had no role whatsoever. So why was she even there?
One word: Publicity. After all, Arizona voters head to the polls in less than 24 hours.
What those voters deserved -- but didn't get today or throughout this campaign cycle -- was a governor capable of answering direct questions about her proposals on jobs, schools and the economy. Without cue cards. And without words whispered into her ear by her lobbyist handlers.
What those voters did not deserve was a governor so arrogantly attached to her standing in the polls that she shamelessly dodged dozens of debates, education forums and town halls across the state. In her eyes, Brewer owed the voters nothing beyond trite TV ads and direct-mail exaggerations.
"Today's publicity stunt is a fitting end to a shameful campaign by Jan Brewer," said Luis Heredia, Arizona Democratic Party executive director. "The damage she has done to Arizona families, schools and tourism will take time to undo. The voters deserved better than this. Arizona deserves better than Jan Brewer."
