Governing from a bunker
What is Jan Brewer thinking? Just yesterday, our governor renewed her attack on the citizen volunteers of the Independent Redistricting Commission. And even after the Arizona Supreme Court rejected her initial illegal power grab, Brewer is still threatening to remove the independent chair of the commission, Colleen Mathis.
Why? Well, she still can't really explain it. But lacking a substantive argument won't deter Brewer or her Republican allies in the state Senate from again trying to remove the independent chair of an independent commission.
What shocks us most is not that Brewer would continue to push a smear campaign against an independent citizen volunteer while trying to steal power from voters and ignore the Supreme Court. No, what surprises us is that a politician so interested in her own press would flagrantly ignore the overwhelmingly negative reaction to her brazen power grab.
Just take a look at the recent headlines:
New York Times editorial: Gov. Brewer's overreach
Arizona Daily Star editorial: Brewer's meddling in commission a detriment to state
Arizona Republic editorial: Each side must keep its cool on redistricting
Terry Goddard: Brewer not heeding oath of office
Rachel Maddow: AZ governor's redistricting meddling thwarted
And that's just this last weekend. It's not like the previous weeks have been any better for Brewer.
So, after the hammering she has taken in the press, we have to ask: Governor Brewer, are you sure this is a good idea?
