Statements to media are way off mark on fiscal devastation cuts would cause
PHOENIX -- On Feb. 28, Gov. Jan Brewer went on Fox News and told host Greta Van Susteren that eliminating AHCCCS, the state's Medicaid program, would cost Arizona about $3 billion in federal funds. She has made similar statements to The Arizona Republic.
But her claims have now rated a flat-out "False" from The Republic's AZ Fact Check feature. Brewer's math is off by $4 billion. Here's an excerpt of the AZ Fact Check article:
... Brewer indicated to The Republic that dumping the program would cost the state $3 billion in federal funds in the next two years. She reiterated the statement in a Fox News interview. ... According to AHCCCS Director Tom Betlach, the move would cost the state $7 billion in federal funding annually.
"The economic devastation that would result from the sudden elimination of $7 billion in federal participation would be crippling," Betlach said in written testimony to the committee. "Unemployment would skyrocket."
