PHOENIX – Tonight's televised debate on "Horizon" offers yet another chance for Republican treasurer candidate Douglas Ducey to come clean on his financial failings. But will he? Ducey doesn't seem to think he has to play by the same rules as the rest of us.
Some questions Arizona voters are still waiting for Ducey to answer:
1. Doesn't the treasurer need to go above and beyond the bare minimum in disclosing personal finances? How will we know whether Ducey is steering state investments in ways that help his own investments if he won't disclose the sources of his income? [The Arizona Republic, 9/2/10]
2. Who is Ducey protecting by refusing to conduct audits of state government -- even though that's one of the statutory duties of the office? [Andrei for Arizona press release, 8/30/10]
3. Why does Ducey defend a Wall Street-based investment strategy that has lost money for the state land endowment fund while doing virtually nothing to create jobs for Arizonans? [Andrei for Arizona press release, 9/15/10]
4. How can we expect Ducey to go after tax cheats and evaders who are costing Arizona nearly $500 million, when he couldn't even pay his own taxes on time for three of the last four years? [The Arizona Republic, 8/8/10]
5. And finally, Mr. Ducey, because you've failed to pay your taxes on time, you failed to pay your company's taxes, your company was delinquent on filing basic corporate paperwork, and you've admitted you haven't filled out your disclosure forms properly -- how can we trust you to do the basic things that the state treasurer is supposed to do? [The Arizona Republic, 8/19/10]
"Douglas Ducey refuses to be accountable or transparent in his dealings, and that spells trouble if he were to hold office," said Luis Heredia, Arizona Democratic Party executive director. "Arizona needs a state treasurer who plays by the rules and is on the side of hard-working Arizonans."
