Statement on GOP's 14th Amendment event today
Luis Heredia, Arizona Democratic Party executive director, issued the following statement in response to today's press conference in Washington, D.C., that featured Arizona Republican lawmakers:
"Arizonans are desperate for relief from a crippling recession that has broken our budget and left thousands of people without jobs or homes. Today, Arizona Republican lawmakers addressed our state's crisis by flying to Washington, D.C., with an urgent demand: Rewrite the U.S. Constitution to redefine birthright citizenship.
"These lawmakers' actions are all wrong, and so are their priorities. Arizona Republicans -- led by Senate President Russell Pearce -- keep waging ideological warfare that helps no one and solves nothing. But we Democrats will keep fighting for our priorities: jobs, schools and the economy. The Republicans in power will fail Arizona again and again unless they start focusing on real solutions to improve the lives of hard-working Arizonans."
